The Big Bend Says Thanks Parade on May 19th for our Post 9/11 Veterans still needs the Community’s support. The Saturday Morning Parade co-hosted by the Vietnam Vets Legacy Vets Motorcycle Club and Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter # 96 is still several thousand dollars short of paying for itself. With the Parade less than 2 weeks away, the Vietnam Veterans of America and the Vietnam Vets Legacy Vets Motorcycle Club are still several thousand dollars short of the fundraising goal that had been set for the Parade.
According to VVA Chapter 96 and Secretary,”Parade organizer Joe West, donations have just not been what both the Chapter and club had hoped for. Mr West stated, ” we’re certainly hoping more people will show up to honor our post 9/11 hero’s than have been in a position to help fund it.” When asked if there was a possibility of cancelling the parade he stated emphatically “absolutely not”, he then jokingly stated, “although we may have to pass the hat around the parade route”.
The event scheduled for Saturday Morning May 19th, ( Armed Forces Day) will begin at 9:15 Am on the South side of the Civic Center parking lot, proceeding up Madison to Bronough, over to Pensacola and back down to the Civic Center Parking lot, and is being held in conjunction with Leon County and VET Inc’s Operation Thank You on Friday night and will be followed by the 8th Annual Veterans Memorial Poker Run.
With the needs for Security, Sanitation, crowd control and clean up it is estimated the parade will cost between 3 and 4 thousand dollars. We certainly hope everyone can make time to say thank you to these brave Men and Women who have steeped up to defend our Country since the horrific attacks of September 11th, 2001 and will reach into their wallets to support the effort to honor their service and sacrifice.
