Operation Thank You was held Saturday, March 30, 2013 to honor and recognize the service of Vietnam Veterans. March 30 has been designated as Welcome Home Vietnam Veterans Day with proclamations made by President Barack Obama and Governor Rick Scott. This year marks the 40 year anniversary when the last of our troops pulled out of Vietnam. Operation Thank You honored the service of all Vietnam Veterans with the Welcome Home they never had.

Vet Events Tally, Vietnam Vets Legacy Vets Motorcycle Club, The Patriot Guard Riders and The Ride Home gathered at the Capitol Thursday March 28, 2013 to call attention to the unhappy birthday of Sgt. Bowe Berghdahl, America’s only known current prisoner of war. Bowe was captured in June 2009 by insurgents in the mountains of eastern Afghanistan and it is believed he is being held by a Taliban-allied insurgent network in Pakistan. U.S. efforts to bring Bergdahl home are wrapped up in slow-moving peace negotiations in Afghanistan with the Taliban; the gathering at the Capitol helped raise awareness of Bowe’s long captivity and to encourage the public to get involved in on-going efforts to bring him home. Thursday marked the fourth birthday Bowe has spent in captivity.

Leon County to Welcome Home Vietnam Veterans

The Leon County Board of County Commissioners unanimously approved Tuesday to host 2013 Operation Thank You on Saturday, March 30 at 8:30 a.m. to honor and recognize the service of Vietnam Veterans. The event will take place at the Vietnam War Memorial located near the corner of South Monroe Street and Apalachee Parkway.

Leon County’s first Operation Thank You was held in May 2012. Following the event’s success, the County Commission made Operation Thank You an annual event at its Board retreat as part of its strategic initiative to support local armed forces members, veterans and their families. “After the huge turnout and positive response from last year’s event, we felt it was important to make Operation Thank You a permanent occasion that serves to honor those who fight and have fought for our freedom,” said Leon County Commission Chairman Nick Maddox.

Recently, there has been a push at both the federal and state level to recognize March 30 as Welcome Home Vietnam Veterans Day with proclamations made by President Barack Obama and Governor Rick Scott.

“This year marks the 40 year anniversary when the last of our troops pulled out of Vietnam and they have never been given a proper welcome home. We feel that it was appropriate that we as a community thank and honor our Vietnam veterans,” said Chairman Maddox.

The Operation Thank You-Welcome Home Vietnam Veterans event will consist of a morning ceremony at the Vietnam War Memorial that will include the presentation of colors, performance of the National Anthem, remarks from Vietnam Veteran and former Prisoner of War Bruce Archer and formal recognition of the Vietnam veterans. Immediately following the ceremony, breakfast will be served in the parking lot adjacent to the Vietnam War Memorial. County Commissioners will be flipping and serving pancakes to Vietnam veterans and members of the community attending the
event.

“The County has a long history of services to those men and women who have served us and our community,” said Leon County Administrator Vincent S. Long. “This County Commission continues to make the veterans of our community a core priority and that makes us all very proud.”

Country Rock POWERHOUSE Tobacco Road November 10 @ American Legion Hall

Join Vet Events Tally, WOLF 103FM and American Legion Post #13 in welcoming the Country Rock POWERHOUSE Tobacco Road to the stage at the American Legion Hall Saturday November 10, 2012. Doors open at 8PM, Tobacco Road Band takes the stage at 9PM.

Ticket sare $12.00 and available on the door. Active Duty members, Veterans and a guest get in for half price. Advance tickets will be available soon on our website as well as at the door the night of the show. All proceeds from this event support the Best Veterans Day Parade in America which is funded, organized and produced by Vet Events Tally.
