Patriotism Education Program (PEP)

PEP_Patriotic_Education_ProgramThe Patriotism Education Program is the brainchild of several of our local Veterans. Many of our younger citizens have never been taught some of the basic protocols of flag respect and basic patriotism with which many of the Baby Boomer Generation were raised.

This is not a lack of respect on their part, but rather a lack of knowledge that 50 years ago was taken for granted. Prior to the Vietnam War, approximately 20% of the population of the United States served in some capacity in our Nation’s Armed Forces. They were taught patriotic protocols, respect and love for our country, and its symbols.

Today, with less than 1% of our eligible citizens serving in the armed forces, patriotic protocols are overlooked. We are hoping to bring them back and to make it popular to be patriotic.

With the help of volunteer educators and the support of the Leon County School administration, Vet Events Tally has put together curriculum for Kindergarten, 3rd, 5th and 8th grade classes. These will be available to the entire Leon County School District in September of 2014.

Our mission is to offer all teachers a one week curriculum that will teach flag etiquette and love for our country. An example, when to stand and place your right hand over your heart, we have coined this "The Civilian Salute", and teach the students when this is appropriate. The Florida Standards are also imbedded in the curriculum.

The plan is to implement the program during the Leon County School District's Constitution Week, which is the 3rd week in September. The teachers will provide 4 days of structured lesson plans and have the option of modifying the lessons to fit their particular class. To culminate the week, a Veteran volunteer, who has completed the necessary orientation, will visit participating classes to interact and speak with the students. It is estimated that we have over 100 Veteran Volunteers supporting this effort.

This program has been in development for the past year and a half and has been given the full support of the Leon County School Superintendent and Administrators.

Vet Events Tally is proud to be a part of this program. We hope the Patriotism Education Program will be a pilot program that other school districts will want to implement in their classrooms.
